WALL, SD – In a move to strengthen the local workforce and provide essential training closer to home, the Wall Economic Development Corporation has partnered with Western Dakota Technical College to offer Commercial Driver's License (CDL) classes in Wall for the first time. Rochan Burrell of Wall's Economic Development Corporation spearheaded the initiative, working closely with Western Dakota Tech to bring experienced driver CDL instruction directly to the community. The program represents a significant step forward in addressing the ongoing need for qualified commercial drivers while eliminating the burden of travel for rural residents seeking certification.
"Giving our workforce a boost with more drivers and giving our community a chance to get their CDL closer to home has been our goal," said Burrell.
Western Dakota Technical College has made rural accessibility a cornerstone of its mission, working to help communities acquire critical skills without leaving their hometowns. The college currently operates a nursing program in Philip and is collaborating with the local high school to bring electrical training to both students and adults in the coming years.
The Wall CDL program combines online training with hands-on instruction using Western Dakota Tech trucks, allowing students to complete their driving requirements locally so they can take their certification tests. The flexible format proved especially valuable for working professionals balancing demanding schedules.
This year's inaugural class produced two graduates: Stran Williams and Thane Simons, both of whom completed their certifications under challenging circumstances. The pair managed to finish their online coursework during harvest season, putting in long hours in the field before returning home to study. After harvest concluded, they completed their required driving hours and successfully passed their driving tests.
"Congratulations to Stran and Thane," Burrell added. “Their dedication shows what's possible when we bring training opportunities to our communities.”
The partnership between Wall Economic Development Corporation and Western Dakota Technical College signals a growing trend of rural communities taking proactive steps to build skilled workforces locally, reducing barriers to professional development and strengthening regional economies.
