In partnership with Wall Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), Black Hills Federal Credit Union (BHFCU) has launched an ongoing Lunch & Learn series to educate people on everything from impulse buying to fraud prevention to how to successfully negotiate for a car.

“The classes have been informative and fun with lots of laughter and participation. People are returning for the whole series and the lunches have been delicious,” said WEDC executive director Dr. Rochan Burrell. “We are so very grateful for BHFCU, Mandi and Jason for doing these classes and for BHFCU for sponsoring the lunch.”

Held the 2nd Wednesday of the month at noon in the City Council Room, the next Lunch & Learn, Understanding Credit & Credit Cards, will be held April 8th.

Protecting Your Financial Well Being Can Actually Be Fun

The first Lunch & Learn of 2026 was titled “Think Twice: Outsmarting Fraudsters & Protecting Your Financial Well-Being”.
Because these days, most of us have received an email or text message claiming there’s an error with one of our accounts, or we owe on a past-due bill that demands immediate attention. NOW.

We’re asked to provide log-in credentials, verify checking or savings accounts, and share the security code on our credit cards. All the while, hearts are racing, stomachs are dropping, and our minds are frantically trying to understand what’s going on.

It’s even become harder to distinguish between fake websites and legitimate ones, tricking users to enter login credentials or other sensitive financial information which can cause immediate, long-term financial devastation or loss.

During the class, attendees explored similar identity theft and investment scans, two of the most common types of fraud, and also learned practical tips to protect their finances.

The second Lunch & Learn focused on “Impulse and Influence: The Hidden Forces Behind Your Purchases”, taking a deep dive into the fascinating realities of retail therapy.

“This class was especially enjoyable, especially when participants shared their strategies on avoiding impulse shopping. Things like, putting things in online cart and then letting them sit 24 hours to see if they really need it, using online shopping carts for groceries which helps keep you on budget so you can see the total before you buy as opposed to walking through the store and getting shocking at the total at the register,” said Dr. Burrell. “One said that they realized the stores use bright lights and slow music to slow you down and keep you shopping!”

Future financial wellness courses include “Master Your Money: Budgeting for Success and Cruise Control: Smooth Car Buying”
