Community Voices Are Shaping Wall's Future

Over the past several months, the Wall Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) gathered input from three important sources—the Community Survey, the High School Student Survey, and our Community Vision Meeting. Together, these efforts provided one of the most comprehensive pictures we've ever had of what residents value most and where they believe Wall should focus its efforts for the future.
While each group offered a unique perspective, one message was remarkably consistent: our community shares a common vision for Wall's future.
Residents, students, and community leaders all identified the same strengths that make Wall special—our small-town atmosphere, strong schools, safe neighborhoods, caring people, and the unique opportunities that come with living near the Badlands. Just as importantly, they also agreed on the areas where we need to grow.
What We Heard
Across all three engagement efforts, several priorities rose to the top:
- More affordable and workforce housing
- More year-round businesses and quality jobs
- Expanded healthcare and childcare services
- More recreation opportunities for youth, families, and seniors
- Improved parks, walking and biking connections, and community gathering spaces
- Greater support for local businesses and skilled trades
Perhaps the strongest message was the desire to make Wall a thriving community year-round—not just during the tourist season. Residents want more opportunities to live, work, learn, and recreate throughout every season while preserving the character that makes Wall unique.
Our Strategic Plan Is Already Moving in That Direction
The encouraging news is that many of these priorities are already reflected in WEDC's Strategic Plan.
- Our work to develop workforce housing, market the Industrial Park, support business expansion, and recruit new employers directly addresses the need for quality jobs and housing.
- Our Business Incubator initiative is designed to help entrepreneurs and skilled trades businesses—including HVAC, electrical, fabrication, plumbing, and other local service providers—start and grow right here in Wall.
- Programs like Leadership Wall, Coffee Connect, business workshops, and partnerships with Western Dakota Technical College and Wall School are helping develop the workforce and community leadership needed for long-term success.
- We're also exploring projects that support year-round activity, including the Fresh Grow greenhouse initiative, expanded recreation opportunities, and partnerships that improve quality of life for residents of all ages.
Moving Forward Together
These survey results will continue to guide WEDC's priorities as we work alongside the City of Wall, Wall School District, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and community members.
In the coming months, WEDC will focus on:
- Expanding workforce and affordable housing opportunities.
- Growing year-round businesses and supporting local entrepreneurs.
- Advancing the Business Incubator Program and workforce development initiatives.
- Supporting projects that improve recreation, connectivity, and community spaces.
- Strengthening partnerships that enhance healthcare, childcare, and educational opportunities.
- Pursuing funding opportunities that help turn community priorities into reality.
